Chennai Super Kings (CSK) posted a 78-run win over touring Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to leapfrog three sides and climb to third in the league standings.Chennai put up a daunting 212-run total riding on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s spectacular 98-run knock and Daryl Mitchell’s 52 before Tushar Deshpande starred with a four-wicket haul to wrap Hyderabad up for 134.CSK were put to bat as Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane walked out to begin the innings. SRH managed to dismiss Rahane early in the game through Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the veteran fell for 9 off 12 deliveries. Kiwi Daryl Mitchell replaced the Indian in the middle as Gaikwad picked up boundaries in a consistent manner as Chennai reached the 50-run mark in the powerplay overs.

Mitchell joined in on the act with a couple of boundaries including a brilliant maximum over long off to welcome SRH skipper Pat Cummins to the crease. Gaikwad raced away to his half-century in 27 balls as he reached the landmark with a spectacular six into the crowd before lifting his willow in jubilation. The hosts brought up the triple-digit mark in the 11th over as Mitchell picked up a four off T Natarajan. The New Zealand batter picked up the scoring rate as he took Shahbaz Ahmed for a couple of boundaries.Mitchell brought up his half-century to keep the scoreboard ticking before he was undone by Jaydev Unadkat and Shivam Dube took his place.Gaikwad peppered the starry stadium with some incredible cricketing shots that oozed authenticity and orthodoxy as he continued his good form at home with the captain’s armband on. Dube settled in well before dealing in maximums while Gaikwad scored all around the park to help his side reach the 200-run landmark.
However, a second consecutive ton at The Den eluded Gaikwad as Nitish Kumar Reddy caught him in the deep off Natarajan’s final over of the innings. The crowd roared to acknowledge the skipper’s knock and welcomed the new man in, the man whose name was plastered across the back of every yellow jersey in the crowd, MS Dhoni. The former skipper delighted the crowd with a boundary off the first ball he faced as he flicked a delivery aimed at his iconic pads. Dube, who has been knocking on the doors of the selectors ahead of the ICC T20I World Cup in just over a month’s time with some incredible power hitting, notched up his fourth maximum of the evening in the penultimate delivery before a single to polish off the innings with the total at 212 runs.SRH looked like they were up to their usual antics as Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma made 20 runs in the first ten deliveries but the crowd cheered with audible passion when the in-form Australian was dismissed thanks to a catch by Mitchell off Tushar Deshpande. The whistles echoed through the grounds and got louder in the next delivery as Deshpande scalped impact player Anmolpreet Singh for a golden duck. It wasn’t long before Deshpande completed his three-fer as he sent Abhishek back to the hut as Mitchell’s safe pair of hands held to the catch offered up by the young Indian.Aiden Markram and Nitish built a 32-run stand before the latter fell prey to CSK star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as Dhoni collected a high catch well away from his mark. The dangerous Heinrich Klaasen walked out to take his fallen teammate’s place in the middle, but the South African partnership was broken rather quickly as Matheesha Pathirana’s ripper of a delivery rendered Markram puzzled and the Protea batter lost his middle stump to the seamer’s yorker.Klassen and Adbul Samad carried the visitors into triple figures in 12.1 overs attempting to keep up with the mounting asking rate. However, the Chennai side managed to choke the opposition’s pursuit in the middle overs with a couple of tight overs as Gaikwad juggled his bowling options well. With the pressure climbing Klaasen lost his wicket to Pathirana as Mitchell collected another catch in the deep as the Chennai faithful celebrated with vigour. Shadrul Thakur got on the scoresheet as he scalped Samad thanks to Samir Rizvi’s catch at long off to reduce Hyderabad to their final three wickets as Cummins took guard. The SRH skipper couldn’t make a dent in the required score as he fell to Deshpande, the seamer’s fourth scalp of the day, with Mitchell picking up his fourth catch of the day.Mustafizur Rahman got his first wicket of the evening with the dismissal of Shahbaz, who found Micthell in the deep for the Kiwi’s fifth catch of the game. Chennai wrapped things up with the scalp of Unadkat, again off Mustafizur’s over, as the hosts returned to winning ways by a margin of 78 runs.
